Dear Friend of Ars Lyrica,

The Baroque was, first and foremost, an age of limitless possibilities. Music benefited greatly, with the invention of opera, the rise of the international virtuoso, and the perfection of harmony itself. In its various “homes”—on the stage, in the church, the concert hall, or the salon—this music still resonates with extraordinary expressive power. Its ability to conjure up an imaginary soundscape, a theater of our own mind, is why we continue to value it so highly.

This season Ars Lyrica probes that interior world with programming that mixes great masterworks with some long-hidden gems. The Baroque opera house bookends the season, with a comic intermezzo by Domenico Scarlatti in September and music for the castrati in June. November and March will bring two major choral works: Monteverdi’s sublime 1610 Vespers and Bach’s magisterial St John Passion. And for New Year’s Eve 2010, we’re planning a festive program of Musical Resolutions, so plan now to spend the evening with us, and get a tuneful start on 2011!

Our 2010-11 artist roster includes some of the world’s finest musicians, including period-instrument specialists and singers of international renown. Subscribe by May 31 and you’ll win a chance at two free Continental Airlines tickets, plus you’ll enjoy a host of other benefits, including some great music in 2010-11.
